Fostering strong connections between human communities and the ecosystems that support them is a main component of Audubon Mid-Atlantic’s urban conservation policy focus. Our environmental centers and programming teams engage with communities by partnering with them on creating habitat, providing experiential environmental education opportunities, spreading awareness about birds, and supporting communities in their desire to live in healthy, clean, and green environments. To that end, our policy work in Baltimore and Philadelphia centers on working with community groups, elected officials, and partner organizations to create green cities full of vibrant accessible bird habitat.

Urban Conservation Policy Priorities

  • Creating more equitable opportunities for everyone to access the outdoors

  • Protecting and preserving green infrastructure networks of watersheds, large parks, small parks, and other habitat that occurs in urban and suburban areas

  • Creating connections between large urban areas and the natural ecosystems that support them
  • Preventing bird collisions with buildings
  • Increasing tree canopy coverage, and protecting pollinator and bird habitat in urban areas
